The cost of getting married in Hong Kong has become very expensive. In 2014, the cost of getting married in Hong Kong has gone to more than HK$311,887, or the equivalent of US$40,218. That figure was derived from the results of a survey conducted by EDSLife, the popular Hong Kong lifestyle portal. The wedding costs showed that the Hong Kong wedding industry is worth HK$17.2 billion, or US$2.2 billion. In comparison, getting married in the US cost only an average of $31,213.

The wedding banquet eats up the biggest chunk of the wedding expenses. On the average, a wedding banquet in Hong Kong will make a dent in the couple’s bank account to the tune of HK$159,519. That average cost of a wedding banquet shows that the wedding banquet industry in Hong Kong is worth around HK$8.8 billion.

The traditional Chinese wedding banquet is far different from its western counterpart. It is not just a meal after the wedding ceremony. It serves not only as a reception for the wedding guests but also serves as the vehicle for expressing gratitude to the parents of the couple who raised them up to this stage of their life.  The wedding banquet formally begins with the sending of the invitations to the guests, with sweet treats included in the invites. The actual wedding banquet consists of five to ten courses, which include special dishes such as lobster, abalone, shark’s fin, swift nests, fish roes, plenty of decorations on the food that symbolizes fertility, and local delicacies.

The wedding banquet is the most expensive part of any wedding in Hong Kong. With many companies offering wedding packages in Hong Kong, they entice people for their services by offering extras such as a night of stay at the bridal suite, better quality meals, and better services. Despite the competition, wedding packages in Hong Kong see an increase of from ten to fifteen percent increase in rates every year. Most wedding packages also include a limousine wedding car.

The other expensive parts of a wedding in Hong Kong include wedding rings and accessories, honeymoons, limousine rental and the wedding photography. These categories account for about 87% of the total cost of the wedding. But the bar is getting higher in today’s weddings in Hong Kong. Couples are willing to spend more money for add-on and extras. It is now becoming a trend in Hong Kong weddings to hire the services of a celebrity emcee whose rate starts from HK$20,000 and may increase up to HK$500,000 depending on the celebrity’s popularity.

Wedding photography is another big expense in Hong Kong weddings. A reputable wedding photographer could charge the couple from HK$22,635 up to HK$80,000. For the best rates for a wedding limousine rental, it is best for the couple to canvass for prices.

Figures from the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department show that the number of Hong Kong couples getting married is on the decline the but the wedding industry is not affected at all. While the number of weddings declines, the cost of each wedding keeps going up, easily making up for the shortfall in the number of weddings.
